How and why I became a wound nurse

Cathy explains how she became a wound nurse after 9 months of being a new RN. As a mom with teen children, night shift was tough during the new grad period. The hospital really wanted Cathy to stay on a night shift and she explains why that wasn’t compatible with her family duties. With a stroke of luck another nurse in the hospital asked her if she knew anyone interested in a part-time day role as a wound vac nurse.

Cathy explains her interview process and initial onboarding as a wound vac nurse. Being a wound vac nurse is a great role because Cathy really enjoys spending longer periods of time with patients and the opportunities with patient relationship development. Plus the hours are very predictable and compatible with her family life.
